In 1983 Veritec inc. invented the 2D Barcode on a partnership with NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to solve a problem.
The system created included the VeriCode® Symbol, a more accurate and versatile alternative to the traditional bar code, that finally solved a problem for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center that was looking for a flawless and secure method of identifying and tracking the Space Shuttle’s parts.
Veritec solved NASA’s need for a technique of marking parts so that NASA could readily check the specifications, its manufacturing history and the operational experience data of any single part among the hundreds of thousands that composed the Shuttle System. It created a PID symbol (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) that could withstand operating temperature conditions ranging from minus 250 degrees Fahrenheit to 2,000 degrees.
Under a brilliant group of scientists, Veritec provided NASA with a space efficient binary marking known as the VeriCode® a symbol that could contain more information than a bar code in a small space as thin as a hair. parts of the Space Shuttle’s surface for permanent identification. The final system using the VeriCode® Symbol , was then, and still is - a more accurate, secure and versatile alternative to the traditional bar code.
